So, you got a new drone—congratulations! 🚀
But before you rush outside and hit takeoff, there are a few things you need to know if you want your drone to last longer than your first flight.
🧠 1. Understand the Controls
Every drone pilot needs to master the basics:
Throttle → Controls altitude
Yaw → Rotates left/right
Pitch → Moves forward/backward
Roll → Moves left/right
👉 Spend a few minutes practicing on the ground or in simulator mode if available.
🌳 2. Start in a Safe Environment
Your first flight should NOT be in your backyard surrounded by obstacles.
✔ Choose an open field
✔ Avoid trees, buildings, and people
✔ Practice hovering at low altitude first
🔧 3. Prepare Your Drone Properly
Before takeoff, always:
Fully charge your battery
Calibrate your compass
Connect and test your controller
Check propellers are secure
📜 4. Follow Safety Regulations
Drone rules matter—both for safety and legality.

Keep your drone within line of sight
Avoid restricted areas
🌦️ 5. Perform a Pre-Flight Check
Never skip this.
✔ Weather conditions (avoid wind!)
✔ GPS signal strength
✔ Battery levels
✔ Drone stability
🧾 6. Complete the TRUST Test (If Required)
If you’re flying recreationally in the US, complete the
It’s quick, free, and required.
🏠 7. Set Return-To-Home (RTH) Properly
One of the most important safety features.
✔ Set RTH altitude higher than nearby obstacles
